Der Palast Barberini ist ein Bürgerhaus und nicht zu verwechseln mit dem Palazzo Barberini in Rom, obwohl es Namenspatron ist und architektonisches Vorbild. Errichtet nach Plänen des Architekten Carl von Gontard in den Jahren 1771-1772 hat das Haus viele verschiedene Bestimmungen gehabt, es war/ist Teil des Gesamtkunstwerkes Potsdamer Stadtzentrum, war Wohnhaus, Kulturhaus, die später zur Havel hin angebauten Seitenflügel waren Jugendherberge, dann war es zerstört und dann verschwunden.
Im Zuge des Wiederaufbaus des Schlosses wurde gleich mal beschlossen, den Rest des historischen Alten Marktes gleich mit wiederzuerbauen und nun hat Potsdam ein neues Museum. Das ist fein.
Meine Aufmerksamkeit erregte das Museum am Tag seiner Eröffnung. Und vermutlich nicht nur meine. Es war der 21. Januar 2017 und die halbe Welt starrte wie gebannt wie bei einem schlimmen Unfall bei dem man einfach nicht wegsehen kann nach Washington, wo der 45. Präsident der USA ins Amt eingeführt wurde, andere taten schöne Dinge: Ich war in Amsterdam und besuchte Marilyn Monroe (https://fraumb-far-far-away.blogspot.com/2017/03/amsterdam-nieuwe-kerk.html), die Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel war in Potsdam und hat das Museum Barberini eröffnet.
Primär dient es als Ausstellung für die private Sammlung der Hasso-Plattner-Stiftung, die in Kalifornien ansässig ist und deren Schwerpunkt hier auf der Kunst der DDR und dem Impressionismus liegt. Aber es gibt wechselnde Ausstellungen. Wir haben hier die Kunst der amerikanischen Moderne gesehen, „Von Hopper bis Rothko“, allerdings war der Name sehr euphemistisch, es gab zwei Hopper und einen Rothko, aber als Zugpferd war er gut, vielleicht wären mir sonst schöne Bilder entgangen. Und kürzlich sahen wir den Neoimpressionisten Henri Edmond Cross in der Ausstellung „Farbe und Licht“. Grandiose Bilder, leider sind die Ausstellungsräume im Erdgeschoss zu klein für große Gemälde, wir Besucher versperren uns ständig die Sicht mit unserer Anwesenheit. Vielleicht wäre es besser, die temporären Ausstellungen komplett im Obergeschoss zu präsentieren und den kleineren Expositionen das untere Geschoss zu lassen. Neben Licht und Farbe könnte man auch noch griechische Götter besuchen, eher in schlicht weiß gehalten und mit sehr irdischer Erscheinung.
Und demnächst (Sommer 2019) gibt es Picasso zu bewundern.

First time ever I heard of the house, pardon palace Barberini in summer 2013 when I was in Potsdam (https://fraumb-far-far-away.blogspot.com/2013/10/potsdam-mitteschon.html?m=0 and following). At that time the whole place was a kind of construction area, now everything is done, the Landtag (parliament of Brandenburg county) is in session in the new erected castle and the the museum the pictures are displayed.
The palace Barberini is bourgeois house, don’t mix it with the palazzo Barberini in Roma, that was the namesake and the architectural role model. Built after the plans of architect Carl von Gontard in the years 1771 -1772, the house got many different usages, it was a living house, cultural centre, the later attached side wings behind the building have been a hostel, then it was damaged in the last war and after that gone.
Over the course of renewing the city castle the Potsdam citizens voted for a complete restoration of the whole area of the Old Market and now Potsdam got a new museum. That’s great.
The museum caught my attention the day it was opened. It was January 21st in 2017 and half of the world was watching with fascinating dismay like at an accident when you can’t turn your eyes, to Washington, where the 45th president of the United States was inaugurated, others did something beautiful.
I was in Amsterdam to see Marilyn Monroe (https://fraumb-far-far-away.blogspot.com/2017/03/amsterdam-nieuwe-kerk.html) and our chancellor Mrs. Angela Merkel was in Potsdam to open up the Museum Barberini. In first place it’s for the exhibition of the Hasso-Plattner-Foundation which is based in California, and the focus here is art of the G.D.R. and the Impressionism. But there are temporary exhibitions too. We went there to meet the American Modernist “From Hopper to Rothko”, the name was quite euphemistic, there where two Hopper and one Rothko, but it was a crowd puller, maybe I would have missed great art otherwise. And lately we saw the Neoimpressionist Henri Edmond Cross at the exhibition “Colour and Light”. Gorgeous pictures, unfortunately are the rooms in the ground floor not big enough for big pictures and we visitors are always in our way with our presence.
Maybe it would be a good idea to display the smaller exhibitions there and let the upper floor alone for the pictures. Beside colour and light also Greek Gods and Goddess’ where to be seen there, plain and simple in white, but with a very earthly appearance.
Next time (summer 2019) you can meet Picasso there.
