Damals, also 1164 brachte ein Erzbischof die Reliquien der heiligen drei Könige nach Köln, er hat sie geschenkt bekommen von einem König, der sie erbeutet hat. Und dann war der Teufel los, alles pilgerte zur Kathedrale und wollte auch mal gucken. Das Gebäude aus dem 9. Jh. War diesem Ansturm nicht gewachsen und eine neue Kirche musste her.
Und so begann 1224 der Bau einer der schönsten und harmonischsten gotischen Kathedralen, und dann ging es Stück für Stück voran, 1248 Grundsteinlegung, 1265 Kapellenkranz fast fertig, 1277 Altar geweiht, 1280 Pläne für Westfassade gezeichnet, 1311 schon mal ein paar Fenster drin, die Kirchenfenster sind einer größten, erhaltenen Glasmalereizyklen des Mittelalters. 1322 Chor geweiht, Reliquien überführt, 1331 Fundamente für das südliche Seitenschiff, 1333 kommt Petrarca (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francesco_Petrarca ) auf Besuch und ihm gefällt, was er sieht, 1437 Glocken im Südturm aufgehängt, 1500 Grundsteinlegung für den Nordturm, 1530 Schicht im Schacht. Da war dann das Geld alle, Reformation, kein Ablasshandel, kein Geld und schön fanden die Leute das Teil nun auch nicht mehr, war halt unmodern.
Dann war der Dom 300 Jahre lang unfertig, obwohl, so ganz zu Ende mit dem Bauen waren sie jetzt auch noch nicht, aber 1814 schrieb einer in einer Zeitung, jemand solle den Dom fertig bauen. Gesagt, getan. Inzwischen waren Barock, Zopfzeit, Klassizismus und vieles mehr fast spurlos am Dom vorbeigegangen, das Industriezeitalter brach an und mit ihn die Neugotik, na wie passend.
Der Dom ist das dritthöchste Kirchenbaus der Welt, das zweithöchste Deutschlands und die meist besuchte Sehenswürdigkeit Deutschlands, bis zu 20000 Besucher täglich, und was soll ich sagen, ich war dabei.
Actually is Cologne famous for its cathedral. Ok, they do have carnival and television too, but I want to tell about something beautiful.
A long time ago in 1164 an archbishop brought the relics of the holy three kings to Cologne, they were a gift from a king, who obtained them. And all hell has broken loose, all and each did pilgrim there and the church house from the 9. century couldn't stand that, a new church was needed.

The money was gone and the reformation came and no selling of indulgences anymore, and by the way, the people didn't like the church anymore, too old and out of fashion.
And there it stand, unfinished for about 300 years, but to tell the truth, they are still busy with construction work, but 1814 one wrote in one newspaper, someone should finish the cathedral. A word and a blow. Meanwhile baroque, renaissance, classic and other times went by nearly without leaving a trace on the building, and now it's the time of industrialization and with that came the neo gothic. It fits, it sits.
The cathedral is the third highest church house in the world, the second one in Germany, and the most frequented point of interest for visitors in Germany, about 20.000 do come everyday, and me was amongst them.
