Heute reise ich in die Vergangenheit, in meine eigene und ich nehme Euch mit. Ich gehe ins ABBA Museum. Ich bin in den 70ern groß geworden und die schwedischen Popgruppe war allgegenwärtig, und zwar auf Grund ihrer hervorragenden Musik, zwei Frauen mit grandiosen Stimmen und zwei Männer mit Ausnahmetalenten als Komponisten und Musiker.
Das Museum wurde 2013 auf der Insel Djurgården errichtet und ist als Dauerausstellung angelegt. Zu Beginn führt der Weg durch Kulissen und Kostüme des Musical-Films Mamma Mia, der erfolgreichste seiner Art. Danach beginnt die Geschichte von ABBA, von den Anfängen als Sieger:innen bei Talentwettbewerben, als Bandleader von Gruppen, die verschiedene Musikstile ausprobierten, als erfolgreiche und oft gespielte Sängerinnen in Radioshows bis zum Zusammentreffen der vier.
Wir erfahren etwas über den ersten Erfolg beim Grand Prix Eurovision, der die Band über Nacht bekannt machte und über die massive Kritik, die ihnen zuhause entgegenschlug, weil die Musik zu markt-orientiert, fade und verlogen war. Nach dem Sieg beim Gran Prix musste Schweden im Jahr darauf Gastgeber der Veranstaltung sein, darauf hin wurde eine alternativer ‚Grand Prix‘ initiiert, um richtige, gute, schwedische Musik zu lancieren.
Aber an den vier Musiker:innen ging das irgendwie spurlos vorbei und die Hits folgten im Monatstakt, Konzerte überall auf der Welt, ein abendfüllender Spielfilm, sowie fabelhafte oder lustige Kostüme oder irgendwas dazwischen und ein kleiner Einblick in das Privatleben der Supertrooper. Besonders berührend fand ich ein Zitat von Björn Ulvaeus, als er darüber sinnierte, wie schnell seine Tochter nun groß wird und wie bald sie ihren Weg ohne ihn gehen wird, während er ihr nach sah, als sie auf dem Weg zur Schule war und ob die Zeit, die er ohne sie verbracht hat, es wirklich wert war.
Das Museum zeigt Kostüme und endlose Reihen goldener Schallplatten und die ganze Zeit gibt es Musik, die mich zurück bringt in meine Zeit als junger Teenager, zu Tagen, als wir vor dem Radio gesessen haben und gehofft haben, dass genau das gewünschte Lied gespielt wird oder, als ich dann im Besitz eines Kassettenrekorders war, dass der Ansager im Radio bitte nicht auf das Ende des Titels raufquatscht, damit die Aufnahme nicht verdorben ist. Wehmut? Ganz sicher nicht. Ich möchte ABBA hören? Streaming-Dienste haben genau was ich suche.
Vieles, was im Museum gezeigt und beschrieben wurde, war nicht ganz neu für mich, denn einmal Fan, immer gut informiert. Nach der Trennung, oder besser, der Pause der gemeinsamen Aktivitäten, waren alle Mitglieder solo tätig und erfolgreich und am Ende sind alle Bitten und Gebete erhört worden - 2021 gab es ein neues Album.
Die meisten Dinge, die mir als Kind oder Teenager wichtig waren, sind es heute nicht mehr, manches habe ich vergessen oder mag es nicht mehr wirklich, die Musik von ABBA bleibt und verknüpft auch andere Orte und spätere Zeiten mit positiven Erinnerungen, wenn ich die Lieder im Ohr hatte. Today I’m travelling into the past, my own past and I take you with me. I’m going to visit the ABBA Museum. I grew up in the 70s and the Swedish pop band was omnipresent, because of their outstanding music, two women with grandios voices and the men with extraordinary talents as composers and musicians.
The museum was built in 2013 at Djurgården island and is a permanent exhibition. At the beginning the tour leads us through the scenery and costumes of the musical movie ‘Mamma Mia’, the most successful of its kind. And then we learn about the story of ABBA, from the start as winners at talent shows, as band leaders of music groups trying different styles, as successful and often played singers at radio shows until their first meet-up.
We get to know about the first major success at Grand Prix Eurovision, that made the band famous overnight and brought them harsh criticism at home, their music is way to bland, phony and commercial. One year later, when Sweden had to host the next Grand Prix they even installed an alternative version to launch all the good and true Swedish music.
ABBA seems not impressed, and new hits followed sometimes monthly, they played concerts everywhere in the world, made a movie played in the cinemas and became famous for their costumes, which were fancy or funny or both at the same time and we got an inside of the private life of the Super-Troopers as well. Very touching a quote of Björn Ulvaeus, when he was waving his daughter bye when she went to school, that came to his mind how fast she is growing and that soon she will go on without him and if all the time being away from the family was the right thing.
The museum shows costumes and endless lines of Golden Records and all the time there is music taking me back to the time when I was a young teenager, back to the days when we were sitting in front of the radio waiting that our favourite song was played or later, when we had cassette players and we hoped the the moderator won’t ruining our recording by talking while the music is still playing. Nostalgic? Definitely not. Wanna listen to ABBA? Steaming services do offer exactly what I want.
Many things I saw or read in the museum haven’t been quite new to me, because one time a fan, all time well informed. After the break-up, or (now we know) during hiatus all members have been successful solo artists and in the end, all our prayers are answered - in 2021 there was a new album.
Many things that have been important to me as a child or young teenager aren’t that anymore, somethings I forgot, other I don’t like anymore, but the music of ABBA will stay and even brings back beautiful memories of other place and times I saw while I was listening to their songs.
