Peter und Paul ist eine Kirche und ganz ordentlich heißt sie katholische Kirche St. Peter und Paul. Sie steht am östlichen Ende der Brandenburger Straße an deren Westende das Brandenburger Tor steht. Die Kirche hat schon öfter mal als schönes Fotomotiv herhalten müssen, aber irgendwie bin ich immer vorher abgebogen, zur Straßenbahn, zum Hotel, zum Bäcker. Ich kann mich auch nicht entsinnen, dass ich jemals eine offene Kirchentür wahrgenommen hätte, diesmal ist die Tür auch zu, aber nur damit man das große Schild: Die Kirche ist offen! sieht. Also, hinein.

Die Kirche, 1870 fertiggestellt, nachdem die Gemeinde dem barocken Vorgängerbau entwachsen war, ist ein interessanter Stilmix, also Architektur-Eklektizismus quasi.. Es gibt romanische und byzantinischen Elemente, barocke und Rokoko-Einflüsse finden sich ebenso wie Wandmalereien, die an bäuerliche Dorfkirchen erinnern, Ikonenbilder und barocke Gemälde, die Dachgestaltung um das Oberlicht herum wirkt wie nordischen Holzkirchen entliehen. Und trotzdem, oder vielleicht genau deswegen wirkt alles passend, auch passend in einer Stadt, die, eher nicht so Weltstadt ist, aber weltmännisch. 

Besonders schön das Altargemälde, das noch aus der ersten Kirche stammt und vom Hofmaler Antoine Pesne stammt und den Titel Todesangst Christi trägt. Auch der Altarraum selbst mit seinen drei Konchen ist speziell und soll an die Hagia Sophia erinnern. 

Der Grundriss ist der eines griechischen Kreuzes und der Glockenturm ist 64 Meter hoch und dem Campanile von San Zeno in Verona nachgebaut. 

Also, wer  Zeit und Muse hat vor oder nach einem Besuch der zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten in Potsdam, die Kirche ist auf jeden Fall einen Blick wert und ein guter Ort für Ruhe und Kontemplation, wenn man das wünscht.

Peter and Paul is a church and its real name is catholic church St. Peter and Paul. It’s located at the east end of the street Brandenburger Straße, at its western end you find the Brandenburger Tor, the Potsdam one. Every now and then I used the church as a fine subject for photographs, but I never went in, I mostly turned away to the hotel, the street car station or the bakery before getting to the end of the street. I can’t remember I’ve ever noticed an open door either. This time the door is closed too, but only the make the big sign ‘The Church is Open’ visible. Let’s go and see.

The church, finished 1870, after the Baroque predecessor building became too small for the community, is an interesting mixture of many styles, architectural eclecticism, quasi. There are Roman and Byzantine elements, Baroque and Rokoko influence as well, and mural paintings, look like taken from simple rural churches, iconic and Baroque paintings and the design of the ceiling around the skylight looks like taken from Nordic wooden churches. Despite or because of that, it appears like everything blends in perfectly, and it fits perfect into a city, that isn’t a metropolis, but got such a cosmopolitan spirit.

I especially liked the altar piece, that remained from the old church and was created by Antoine Pesne, the famous court painter and is named: Christi’s fear of death. Even the altar space itself with the three conches is special and built after the model of the Hagia Sophia. The layout is a Greek cross and the bell tower is 64 meters high and modeled after the campanile of San Zeno in Verona.

So, if you got time and leisure before or after exploring all the places of interest in Potsdam, that church is definitely worth a visit and a good place for contemplation too, if you wish so.
