Das Muss in Paris - Tour Eiffel - The Must-do in Paris

Wer in Paris ist, kommt nicht drumherum, er ist überall, in der Skyline, auf allen Souvenirs, auf Kaffeehaus-Schildern, als Schlüssel- und Kettenanhänger, in chic und billig, kitschig und künstlerisch - der Turm aus Eisenfachwerk, ein Meisterwerk der Ingenieurskunst, der Turm des Ingenieurs Gustave Eiffel. Erbaut als temporäre Installation zur Weltausstellung 1889 gibt es ihn noch immer, weil improvisierte Dinge, Totgesagtes und Vielgescholtenes oft am Längsten überdauert.

Lange Zeit, genau genommen bis 1930, war er mit seinen 312 Metern das höchste Gebäude der Welt. Allerdings reicht die Höhe immer noch aus, um als Funkturm zu dienen, von hier aus wurde 1921 das erste europäische Rundfunkprogramm und 1935 das erste Fernsehprogramm gesendet. Noch mehr Superlative? Das Restaurant in der Spitze ist eine Ein-Stern-Restaurant, allerdings ist es ein Michelin-Stern und mit jährlich sieben Millionen Besuchern ist der Turm das meistbesuchte Wahrzeichen der Welt. Oft kopiert, nie erreicht, zum Beispiel der Tokyo Tower in Japan. Der Turm ist inzwischen als monument  historique denkmalgeschützt und gilt seit 1986 als Meilenstein der Ingenieurbaukunst, jedenfalls offiziell. 

Und außerdem sieht er schön aus in seiner schlichten Elegant und bildet einen angenehmen Kontrast zu der wuchtigen Architektur des Palais de Chaillot am Trocadéro. 

Es ist immer voll am und um den Turm, auf dem Marsfeld und am Trocadéro, die sieben Millionen müssen ja irgendwie präsent sein, und inzwischen muss man durch den Security Check wie am Flughafen, um zum Turm zu kommen. Man kann online Tickets reservieren und muss dann eventuell nicht für die Dauer eines verlängerten Wochenendes am Fahrstuhl anstehen, um auf die Aussichtsplattform zu gelangen. 

Wir hatten keine Reservierung und noch viel vor, darum haben wir den Turm von unten und von weitem und des Nachts gesehen und gehen weiter zum Arc de Triomphe.

If you are in Paris, you can’t escape, it’s everywhere, in the skyline, on all the souvenirs, on coffee shop plates, on key rings and pendants, très chic and trashy, kitschy and artistic - the tower made of wrought-iron lattice, a masterpiece of engineering art, the tower of Gustave Eiffel. Build as a temporary installation for the world exhibition of 1889, it’s still there, maybe because improvised things, and condemned and those said to be dead seems to stay forever. 

Long time, to be precise till 1930, it was the tallest building in the world and its 312 meters are still high enough to serve as a radio and television tower, from here in 1921 the first European radio show was broadcasted and in 1935 the television followed. More superlatives? The restaurant on top is a one-star-restaurant, but it’s a Michelin-Star and with about seven million visitors each year the tower is  the most frequented landmark in the world. It’s often copied, like the Tokyo Tower in Japan. Meanwhile the tower is declared monument historique and heritage-protected and since 1986 it counts as milestone of art of engineering, officially. 

And it looks beautiful in its simple elegance and makes a pleasant contrast to the monumental architecture of the Palais de Chaillot at the place Trocadéro.

It’s always crowded at and around the tower, the Mars Field and at Trocadéro, seven millions have to be put somewhere and you have to pass nowadays security checks like at an airport to enter the area. You can order tickets online and don’t have to wait your whole holiday weekend to get into the elevator to reach the observatory.

We didn’t had any reservation and still a lot on our list, so we went on to see the Arc de Triomphe.
