Saint Germain des Prés 2.0 Paris

Bei meinem ersten Besuch hier, vier Jahre vor dem jetzigen, war vor allem die Lichtlosigkeit in der Kirche beeindrucken (https://fraumb-far-far-away.blogspot.com/2013/09/saint-germain-des-pres.html). Es war düster, wie die Zeit, aus der die Kirche stammt. Andererseits gibt es in unserer Zeit das Phänomen der Lichtverschmutzung, es wird nie mehr richtig dunkel, irgendwo leuchtet immer eine Lampe oder ein Lämpchen. Sind wir deswegen heller? Also muss ich meinen Schlußsatz aus dem damaligen Blogeintrag relativieren, besonders nach dem jetzigen Besuch.

Denn, die Kirche ist hell, jedenfalls dort, wo mit viel Vorsicht und Aufwand die dunkle Patina vieler Jahrzehnte abgewaschen wurde und die wundervollen Wandmalereien erneuert wurden und nun in altem oder neuem Glanz erstrahlen können. 

Noch gibt es viel zu tun, aber wenn alles fertig ist, wird das Kircheninnere ein Farbteppich sein. Ein Rausch in Gold, Bordeaux, Grün und Blau, der die grandiose Architektur, besonders die Kreuzrippen des Dachs hervorragend zur Geltung bringt. Das gleiche gilt für den Chor, der einer der ganz alten Teile der Kirche ist, geweiht im Jahr 1163, und obzwar die Malereien aus dem 19. Jahrhundert stammen, sind sie die perfekte Ergänzung zur mittelalterlichen Architektur.

At my first visit, four years before the current one, I was mostly impressed by the lightlessness in the church. It was dark, like the period the building dates (https://fraumb-far-far-away.blogspot.com/2013/09/saint-germain-des-pres.html). On the other hand, there is such thing like light pollution in our time, it’s not getting real dark anymore, somewhere is always a lamp on. Are we more enlightened since? That’s why I have to qualify my statement from my above mentioned blog entry, especially after my visit now. 

Because, the church is radiant now, at least where with a lot of care and effort the darkened patina of many decades had been removed and the gorgeous mural paintings are renewed and now shine in old or new splendour. 

There is still work to do, but after that, the church will be a carpet of colours, a rapture in gold, bordeaux, green and blue, which brings out the impressive architecture in a great way, especially the rib vault of the roof. The same with the altar room, which is one of the oldest parts of the church, sanctified in 1163, and even if the paintings on the walls remain from the 19th century, they are a perfect match with the medieval architecture.
