Edinburgh - St. Cuthbert and St. John

An der Kirche St. John bin ich am ersten Abend auf meinem Weg zum Castle Rock vorbei gekommen. Aufgefallen sind mir hier große Plakate, die auf die Situation von Geflüchteten aufmerksam machen. Unter dem Hashtag #whodecides, wer entscheidet, werden der desaströsen Situation der Menschen Namen und Gesichter gegeben. Ich habe schon zuvor gelesen, dass viele schottische Politiker die rigide Haltung in London in Bezug auf die Aufnahme von Geflüchteten mehr als ablehnen. Sie sagen hingegen, der Zuzug von Menschen aus den Kriegsgebieten bietet eine große Chance für ein Land mit einer eher niedrigen Geburtenrate und viel Land mit wenig Menschen. Schottland, sagen sie, profitiert von Migration.

Neben der Kirche St. John gibt es die Kirche St. Cuthbert mit einem alten, teils etwas verwahrlosten Friedhof, was seiner Schönheit aber eher zuträglich ist. Die Kirche selbst kann ich nicht besuchen, es findet gerade ein Trauergottesdienst statt, und vermutlich würden es die Trauergäste nicht begrüßen, wenn ich mit meiner Kamera hereinplatze und Fotos mache. 

Also besuche ich St. John. Von außen durchaus imposant, aber das Innere hat mich überrascht. Die Deckenmalerei erinnert an Art Deco, ist aber eine Reminiszenz an die Deckengestaltung der Henry VII.- Kapelle in der Westminster Abbey. Die Glasfenster stammen fast alle von Ballantine. 

Es ist einiges an Renovierung im Gange und eine Reihe von Schautafeln geben genauer Auskunft über diese Arbeiten. 

Alles in allem, ein sehr interessanter Fund.

I already passed along the church St.John the first evening I arrived on my way to the Castle Rock. I realised the huges posters, that lead the attention to situation of refugees. By the hashtag #whodecides the disastrous situation of people gets names and faces. I read about, the Scottish politicians are far away from agreeing with the hard line of the London Government when it comes to the refugee crisis. Many think, that a country with a low birth rate and much space and less inhabitants would benefit from migration. 

Beneath St. John is another church, St. Cuthbert, with an old, a bit unkempt churchyard, what kind of multiple its beauty. I didn’t visit because there was a funeral service held, and I guessed, the mourning party wouldn’t have been that pleased by me coming in taking pictures. 

So I go for St. John instead. The church outside is quite impressive, but inside it was a real surprise. The ceiling’s painting reminds me of Art Deco, but it’s actually a derived from the one of the Henry VII Chapel in Westminster Abbey. The stained glass windows are mostly by Ballantine.

There is some construction work going on and some boards are showing some explanations about that. 

All in once, an interesting find.
